Just keep going, going, going...

I realize I haven't written much lately.  Instead of trying to explain my absence, I'm just going to keep writing as if I never was gone. :)

These past few weeks have been tough mentally running-wise.  My knee was acting up and I began to wonder if I was even going to be able to run this half marathon.  It also was pretty darn windy.  And two weeks straight of running in windy conditions I actually turned to the dreadmill.

For my knee, a couple friends suggested maybe I had upped my miles too quickly.  I reviewed my training (a perk of writing everything down), and I found that had indeed been the case.  I had perpetually missed a run here and there - and suddenly I had gotten them ALL in.  So while I had increased my weekly long runs very gradually, I had a huge spike in my overall weekly mileage.  The jump was from 13 to 20 miles - so not small.

I took a weekend off and ran a very easy 4 miles for my long run to ease up on my miles.  And this past weekend I set myself up to again try another long run - 9 miles.  I was rather nervous about this run to be honest.  I had decided if it didn't go well I wouldn't do the half after all.  I need to know that I had some chance of being successful at this race.

Saturday approached and I found myself running the entire 9 miles alone.  Typically I can scrounge up a running partner for at least part of it - but it just hadn't worked out.  I wasn't really happy about that - well...that probably isn't a fair description.  Ever been in a crowded room and felt completely alone?  It was more of that feeling.  I know all sorts of runners - yet I couldn't find anyone to run with.  And it really messed with my head.  After about mile 2.5 a song came on - and I honestly don't know which one.  The Lord just spoke to my heart and convinced me to use the time to spend with Him.  The song fit perfectly and it was a light bulb moment for me.  He reminded me I wasn't really ever truly alone and no matter what was going on with people around me - He was there...as He has been through-out my life.  So I was finally able to let that go and enjoy myself and the pretty day that was before me.

And boy was it a beautiful day. It was such a blessing!  I had checked the weather Fri and it showed that it was supposed to rain.  I guess the rain was a day late - because it has been raining all day today.  It wasn't too terribly windy (just a good gust here and there), too hot nor too cold...really just a beautiful day.  And I soaked it all in.

My knee did tighten up a few times and I found that running and stretching out my leg (tough to explain) did the trick.  I had no knee pain during or after or the next day.  I completed my 9 miles and am so proud of that run.  My training seems to be fitting together.  Next week I'm scheduled for a 10 miler.  I'll be in hilly OK where I will again meet my old nemesis the Hill of Death. But getting away and running for over 2 hrs will be a cinch (and honestly probably a welcome break).  The following week I'm signed up for a 5K - so just in time for a "rest" weekend.  (I may throw in a couple extra miles this weekend...3 seems so small anymore.)

I'm blessed by my creator.  He takes the time to hang out with me - even if maybe sometimes He isn't my first (or second, third or fourth) choice.  If this sounds hokey, then it is probably because you've never been there.  Truth is truth.

Oh - and I have more to say about Sarah.  I've moved on in my studies but haven't had time to go back and write down my last few thoughts on Sarah.  While I've read Genesis before - I've really been amazed at all the new things I've learned.  Like how slow of a learner Jacob was.  After reading about Jacob, I just realized that some people will NEVER follow Christ no matter how apparent He has made himself in their life.  (Jacob was pretty slow...sure he came around...but it was A LONG TIME before he finally claimed God as his own!)  More to come... :)

My first DNS...

This Saturday is the local Jingle Bell run.  I wasn't going to register at first, because I've determined not to run anymore races for awhile unless I'm running WITH someone.  I'm just tired of running by myself.  (There IS a time and place for it...)

Anyway - my dear friend Ashely and I were planning on running last Saturday.  She also mentioned she signed up for the Jingle Bell run - and encouraged me to do so as well.  So I checked with William and went and registered that day - it was the last day before the prices went up.

TURNS OUT...William is on call! ACK!  And because of that I'm not going to get to go...resulting in my FIRST did not start (DNS).

There is a slim chance his coworker will take over for the money.  (Hourly coworker who is perpetually broke...) So I've got my fingers AND toes crossed...because I was actually looking forward to it.  I was marveling in the fact I signed up for the 4 miler and the 1 miler (only $5 more) and knew I would be able to complete it NO PROBLEM.

On my recent post-Thanksgiving run in Oklahoma
And the Saturday run?  Glorious.  It was cold, and I can't say I enjoyed it WHILE I was running it (also VERY windy) - but I had great company which made it worthwhile.  We ran 4 miles.  I also had run 4 miles the day before - so I was starting to feel it.  And the last mile or so...oh my goodness...Kansas MAY be flat which seems like an easy run.  But we have ENTIRELY too much wind.  And after running HILLS the day before I fail to see much difference between our brisk wind and a hill! :)

The GOOD news is I made a personal record...the 4 miles was done in 50:51.  And I owe that entirely too Ashley.  She made me run in the wind (something I tend not to do - those seem like good walk breaks haha) and she tends to run faster...I definitely need to run with her more often! :)

I've taken some photos from my various runs lately - and you'll be seeing them pop up on Wednesdays.  We've had some gorgeous scenery - one of my many reasons for running!

Eyeing my next race

I've been on the hunt for my next race.  I'm already entered in the Prairie Fire Mayor's 5K race...but I'm interested in doing some more. :)  I really enjoy races from the spirit of it all!

At first I found a 10K on Oct 1 I thought about doing.  William is already busy that day, and after some thought I don't really think I have enough time to really give it my all.  Plus - it is a $40 entrance fee.  Yikes!  I realize it is a benefit run...but that seems high for a race that I'm not all that prepared for.

So I'm still tossing around the idea but probably will not do that one.

The next promising one is Oct 23rd and is an 8K.  I have not run this distance yet, but I feel CERTAIN I could get there by then.  I'm really close...I'm already doing 4 miles for my "long runs".  The ONLY thing is that it appears that it all needs to be done in 1:15.  I'm not entirely sure that is true, but I am sure that I may be barely able to finish by then.

But you know what?

It doesn't hurt to try.

So I'm considering THAT one.

There is also a big party afterwards, which just seems FUN!

What I'd really like is a 10K that is out there to really cause me to train.  I'm seriously considering doing a half marathon in the spring.  I'd love to have one picked out already so that I can start "planning" my training down to the week.  I'd love a local one - I have a friend that runs on in OKC.  It is a consideration.  We'll see!

I love racing.  So finding some more is definitely at the top of my list and peruse the calendar every couple weeks to see what is out there. :) And the more I think about it...the more I want to do this 8K...now to find a running buddy!  (Races are MORE FUN with buddies!)

Miriam and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Run

As I've mentioned before, it has been working pretty well for me to run whenever the Lord tells me too.  I know...weird...if you don't live that way.  I'm ok with being weird.

But...

I have to share this in the interest of "keeping it real", something I believe I frequently mention here.

Saturday I had an amazing run.  I went 4.25 miles, set some personal records and I felt like I could have probably kept running.  I did take a walk break at the 3 mile mark, but I was OK with that.  I actually did mostly to ensure I had a strong last mile.  (I did feel like I could have kept going slowly without the walk break...which has its merits!)

I beamed all weekend long about that run.  It was just that good.

Monday rolled around and I went for yet another run.  This particular day, I was pretty amazed how things worked out.  I woke up late, pumped, did some laundry, made Rebekah's lunch (I had forgotten the night before)...and still got out in time to run.  Amazing really and a testament that the Lord is the keeper of our time...when we let Him.

Wed rolled around and I didn't particularly feel like running.  The Lord didn't tell me to go...or not go...so my defacto choice is normally to go.  But because I didn't feel like going, I was fighting that choice.  I knew deep in my heart it was the right thing to do.  So I went.  I got out there even a little earlier than normal.

And I ran.

It was a horrible run.  My legs felt like led, it was dark the ENTIRE time (which I don't mind for the first 1/3-1/2 but after that I'm ready for at least the light to be peaking out!) and I simply wasn't "feeling" it.  I pushed and pushed hard.  I wanted to walk every step of the way.  (Honestly - I may have if I felt like I had the time...but knowing I needed to get home and get ready for work pushed me along.)  I hated this run fiercely.  It has been awhile since I've had THAT bad (and hated) of a run.

I have been pondering this ever since.  What makes a good run?  And how fascinating that you can run in the same conditions, but emerge feeling great about one run and horrible about the other!  Aren't feelings a funny thing?

And in case you haven't read it, you should check out Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad day...awesome book!

A walk in the park

Last Sunday afternoon I found myself alone with all 3 kids.  I find that hanging out with them goes smoother if I have some fun activity planned.  I had been feeling "blah" from the lack of exercise the previous week, so I wanted to incorporate some sort of exercise into my plans.

I suggested a walk to the kids - but they revolted.  Noooo...they wanted to go to the playground.  *sigh*  The playground just means me standing around pushing them in the swing!  So I suggested the zoo...usually a winner.  Noooooo...the playground.  They were certainly insistent and persistent.  Minds made up I came up with a novel solution...

We drove to the park, but I parked about a mile away and we walked.  :)  Ok - I kind of "tricked" them.  I said we were going on a walk, playing at the park then walking back to the car.  I pointed out how everyone got what they wanted.

They were totally on board until about halfway into the walk.  I will probably never be able to do this again...

This is while they were still happy on the walk...

I *LOVE* this bench and pass by it all the time when running!

It was shortly after the bench that I had to go into cheer leading mode.  We are almost there! I said...knowing it was still a ways off.  OH LOOK!  See that bend in the path!  The park is just past those trees!  (That was the total truth.)  We made it and I had happy children.

Yep - even Ruth was happy to watch!

Please notice the foot - she was totally hanging out!

Rebekah calls this the "Pepperoni Swing".
I thought it was rather observant.
Ruth was pretty patient.  Peter, on the other hand, was not.  He loves the "baby" swings.  We had stopped by first, but his favorite (kiddie swing with a belt across the front) was broken.  I wouldn't let him swing in it.  But he kept insisting that he wanted to go back and swing on a regular baby swing.  So after Rebekah had done what she wanted, we headed to the other side of the park (again) so Peter could swing on the baby swings.

Since we were there, and two swings were open (the park was insanely busy on such a beautiful day...), I plopped her in one.

She enjoyed it....

And enjoyed it some more....

And of course Rebekah did her sisterly duties and pushed her...

Exactly HOW does this connect?

Rebekah hung out in the sandbox, which is near the
baby swings, while the other two swung.
The kids had fun and were disappointed we had to leave.  "But we didn't get to play EVERYWHERE" they cried.  I just told them they had something to look forward to another day. ;-)  I'm such a mean mom!

They mile trek back wasn't quite as smooth as the way there.  They started in the whinning and revolting about 5 minutes into the walk.  Frankly, I was surprised it took that long.  They were pretty tired.  By the way...exactly how long does it take to walk 1 mile with 3 little kids?  About 30 minutes...

Once we were in the car and buckled in, Rebekah remarked "Mom, next time let's just drive all the way to the park."  Well...I dunno about that.  I rather enjoyed the combination of park time and exercise time.  And lately I've been rather concerned that my kids aren't in as good of shape as they could be.  I go off and exercise...but I don't usually bring them.  What am I teaching them?  Healthy family activities need to become a more regular part of our every day life.

Which is why we took a family bike ride the next Tuesday....to which Rebekah replied "Next time let's just drive."  I apparently have my work cut out for me. ;-)

Stupid cold...

There have been times where I was grateful to be sick. For example - earlier in the year I got strep...and it gave me a good "reason" to sleep my day away.  (Yeah...sometimes as a mom I do need a reason that is valid to me...otherwise I'm just wasting time!)

Today?  Not so much.  I first realized I was sick yesterday when I went to get my lunch and I was having a little trouble walking in a straight line.  Turns out - I was on the dizzy side.  I knew I had felt off, but sitting at my desk I couldn't really put my finger on the problem.

I still have bouts of dizziness, but my main issues is pure exhaustion.  I feel drained and I feel like I should sleep...but of course have no time for that.  Work deadlines and a household to run...this pesky cold is not going to stop me.

Well...it will stop me from one thing.  I can't in good conscience go on a run when I can barely function during the day.  And that is my biggest beef with this cold.  I was on a roll man!

A little insight into Miriam...I view reasons to NOT do everything as excuses.  Really, there are always a million of them and they are always really good.  Ok - some of them are better than others.  In my personal experience, I've found that doing is better than not doing.  There is a great personal satisfaction that goes along with choosing the Lord's path.  That is about the only thing that will stop me in my tracks - the Lord telling me "no" or "not now".  Running is a great example of that.  I've run in super hot weather, rainy weather and I'm sure that shortly I will run in frigidly cold weather...only because the Lord said "GO".  This pretty well applies to all areas of my life. And if the Lord had told me to run, despite the cold, I totally would have.

This past week I attended a function at work.  I was chatting with a coworker who I didn't know all that well and the conversation turned to kids.  She asked me how many kid I had and how old they were.  So I told her...3 kids ages 5, 3 and 10 mo!  Her eyes crossed and she said "How do you work FULL TIME and take care of 3 kids?"

Careful planning...

Just kidding.  I laughed and told her I didn't really have a good answer for that.  The truth is that this is what the Lord has called me to do.  And whatever the Lord asks, He will also give you a way to do it.

Do you not know?
Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary,
and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary
and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the LORD
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

~Isaiah 40:28-31 (NIV)

And so I will continue on...doing whatever work the Lord puts before me.  And for now - running is not part of that and neither is weighing in.  :)

Ha ya! Weigh-in TODAY...

Well this morning I diligently got up to run, only to find it wasn't a running day for me.  Oh well...I was bummed.

BUT - it worked out for the best.  This morning I packed Rebekah's lunch (well...finished up packing).  The little stinker got into her partially packed lunch box and found a cookie I had been intending to surprise her with.  EGADS!  I had also written her a little note.  She was thrilled, but I was SO BUMMED that she wasn't surprised...ya know?  Stinker!  I also told her she was a stinker! ;-)

We all managed to get out the door and to our respective places on time.  I'm not convinced that would have happened had I gone running...

In other news - I went on another 4 miler on Saturday.  It was an interesting run...I ran with my friend who did a total of 8 miles.  I joined up with her on her second half.  Second was better - kept her company and she didn't mind going slower!  (She tends to run at a 10-11 min pace on her shorter runs...)  I had already pre-determined it would be a relaxed run for me...just a "get out there do" sort of run.  This was also my 3rd time running with anyone and I've noticed everyone runs differently.  Since it was my first time running with her (and wasn't sure what to expect), I didn't want to many expectations.

I had a blast.  I'm finding I really enjoy running with other people too.  We chatted and gabbed the ENTIRE way and it made it just ZIP by.  We mostly talked about exercise, the funny things we've noticed in the park and other random tidbits.  I appreciated the brain dump...particularly with regards to winter running (something I've already started to think about so I can get appropriate winter-running gear).  We even talked about motivations for running...mine centered around my love of being outside and in nature.  And this is largely why I'd choose to do a run in 105F vs. running on a treadmill... :-)

My run ended up being 30 seconds faster than the previous 4 mi, but the splits were a little closer to even (unlike last time where I had 13:30 paces for the first 3 mi then a SLOW-practically-walking-pace for the last mile) which I believe to be a good thing.  There was also gratuitous walking, which I believe contributed to a strong finish.  (I felt like I could keep on going!)  It was a GREAT run!  I enjoyed it!

And since I didn't get out and run this morning - I did weigh myself!

Total lost from my heaviest:  91 lbs
Total lost since Feb*: 24 lbs
Weight lost in the last week:  0 lbs
Weight left to loose: 19 lbs

Womp womp!  Second week in a row with NO CHANGE...which means...I'm going to start a food log for the next 3 days.  I'll be posting it...for fun. :-)  And because I'm watching what I eat, I'm sure it'll be better than what I've done in the previous TWO weeks...haha! I know I've gotten a little lazy and my "occasional" treats have not been so occasionally...which is why I'll probably be married to the scale for the rest of my life.  I apparently just need that check.  (Of course...I think once I'm done with my weight loss, I can move it to a once a month or something...)

*Feb is when I began working on finishing loosing this weight.  I had paused this effort when I became pregnant with Ruth last year.  Loosing weight while pregnant is not advised.

Running for Jesus (sounds hoaky, but it's true!)

My weigh-in days will have to be Tuesdays.  Monday has turned into a running morning...and will probably stay that way for awhile. :)  So I have no update today.

BUT...I do have something I want to share.

Jesus talked a lot about how He was here to do His Father's business, and he wasn't leaving before it was done.  (Refer to Matthew-John.)  I've been thinking a lot about this...

In order for us to do all of the work God has planned for us, I would imagine that there isn't much time for running off and doing our own thing.  There is no such thing as going "above and beyond" with God.

So Wednesday I woke up to the crackle of thunder and the split splat of rain drops.  Flashes of light momentarily lit up my room as I sat up.  I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and proceeded to get up anyway.  There have been many times where I've gotten up and the storm has cleared up as I stepped off my front porch for a run. So I went about my morning preparations.

When I got close to finishing up, the rain was going strong.  I thought of some good reasons to not go running...including the obvious "It's raining!" reason.  The Lord has told me before whether or not to run...and this particular day He very specifically told me to GO.  I got ready and thought "He's gonna make the rain stop as I step out again!  Hooray!"

I took a step off my front porch...and nope.  It continued to rain.  I hesitated for a second, but again heard the "GO".  I continued to the car and hopped in.  As I pulled into the very empty parking lot of the park, I again hesitated.  These hesitations were small...if you were watching me you'd never know it.  But they were there in my heart.  I faithfullly got out of my car and went.  It was a light rain.  I thought "Ok, He's waiting until I started my jog before easing up on the rain..."

Nope.

It only began raining harder.

I wasn't pelted, but it rained a "medium" rain the entire jog.  I sloshed my way through the puddles and wished I had thought to bring a hat.  I kept my phone in my pocket (I usually carry it and check my timing regularly) and wiped the rain out of my eyes.

I spent a lot of time trying to decide whether I liked running in the rain.  I didn't hate it.  It certainly was a huge improvement over some of the 100F + runs I've done.  And I think if I had a hat to keep the rain out of my eyes, I'd been perfectly fine.

I completed my run feeling very satisfied that I had done it.  I returned to my car and turned the key...and nothing.  Nothing.  Nothing.  Nothing.  I paused, took a deep breath and tried again.  My car started.

Sometimes, I think we don't have to pray a specific prayer.  Prayer isn't formal.  The Lord had been with me on my run.  He was right there with me in my car.  My sigh was all the prayer I needed.

My radio made a loud racket (previously off) and I noticed my clock was set to 12:00.  Sure signs my battery had died and the Lord had started my car.

In the two minutes I drove home the Lord also showed me a plan for how to get everything done that morning with little impact to our schedules.  William was to go get the battery changed.  I was to get the kids ready and drop them off at daycare.  Yep.  William drove my car.  And the Lord kept it running.  We followed his plan and I was only 30 min late and William arrived at work on time.

Yeah - it rained.  And we really needed the rain.  Honestly, who wants to go jogging in the rain or change a car battery in the rain?  Probably not anyone's first choice.  But the Lord was providing for our environment and for us all at once.  We got it all done...in the rain.  It was a blessed morning.

And because I was faithful, my day was blessed.  I was able to get absolutely all the work He set before me to do that day, including finalizing some school details for my daughter.  My day would have not worked out so well if I had to get a battery change later in the day...including possibly missing a fun work outing that occurred that afternoon.

The next day I was bound and determined to get another shorter run in.  I felt a little tugging in my heart that maybe I shouldn't go on that run. My kids were up.  I was running late (to get out of the house for the run).  I didn't really S.T.O.P. and ask God what His plan was for my morning.  *I* really wanted to go.

So I went and did my thing.  My morning was chaotic and my day chaotic.  Would it have been less chaotic if I hadn't gone running?  Possibly.  I don't know for sure what the Lord's plan was because I didn't bother asking.  I knew what I wanted to do.  I do know that I would have had inner peace had I chosen to ask and follow His will for my day.  After all, the day before wasn't exactly "calm", but it certainly was peaceful.

Once the difference in my days dawned on me, I made the determination to ask God what He wanted each and every day.  I went running Saturday (my first 4 miler) and it was blessed.  I went this morning.  It was blessed.  I'm a slow learner but I get there.

I almost forgot to ask this morning in my zealousness to get out the door so I wouldn't be running "late".  (I get to work about 30 min later on running mornings than non-running mornings...but that is OK.  I can fit more running time in overall...so staying 30 min later in the evenings isn't a huge deal...I pick up kids at the same time anyway.)  The Lord stopped me in my tracks and requested I sit down with Him and chat.  I did.  We talked about some prayer requests and showed me where to pray.  Then He told me to go run.

And you know what?  I had a blessed morning.  I was particularly blessed that William woke up and took a shower ON HIS OWN while I was out.  That is a miracle people.  Peter was already dressed.  It was a great morning.

So my message of the day...go about your Heavenly Father's work.  Do exactly what He asks...you don't have to do anymore than that.  You certainly shouldn't do any less than that.  He'll guide you not only in the super large life changing things, but in your day to day management as well.  And you'll be blessed for it.

It is one of those lessons where I'm going "Duh Miriam!"...but sometimes it takes a bit to take to heart those simpler lessons. :)

Mon...Tuesday Update

I have a very good reason for not posting my weekly Monday Weigh-In results...I didn't weigh myself!  And I had a very nice post in mind about some awesome weekend happenings...but didn't get to it.

So...today you get two-posts-in-one!

First - the reason for no update yesterday is I went for a morning run.  I don't get to take those much, but because of a doctor appointment for Ruth I didn't have to be at work so early. :-)  And I took advantage of the situation!  (I much prefer running in 75 versus 105!)  It was a 3-miler, which was GREAT!  In a running magazine I was recently given it talked about having a purpose for each run.  Saturday my purpose was to build my speed...so I attempted to keep my speed in a target range (11-12 min pace).  This resulted in fatigue and walking periods.  (Turns out - just a single 1 minute walking break...I ran slower as well outside of that.)  Monday my goal was endurance...so I made sure I ran at least at a 13:30 pace or faster.  I gave myself a point where I could walk that was further than I had ever gone before (2.5 miles).  But when I got there I found running a little slower then speeding up was just as effective.

Turned out I ran the entire thing - which was HUGE for me.  And my mile breakouts turned out to be pretty great too.

Mile 1:  13:21
Mile 2:  13:08
Mile 3:  13:04

It was awesome!  I was especially proud of mile 1 because my legs would not go for what seemed like forever.  I had some pain in my right hip and left knee.  I felt like an old lady. ;-)  (I need new shoes...I'm fairly certain that is the root cause of the pain.)  The pain eventually worked itself out and I was able to go go go.

Total run time: 40:06.  Not a record, but only a minute slower than my record.  Not too shabby.

So all that to say - I didn't have time to weigh myself.  I was too busy. ;-)

I did weigh myself this morning.  I honestly did not care what the numbers were.  I was already flying high due to a wonderful shopping trip I had this past weekend.  Last week - by an act of God I was walking around without my pants falling down.  They barely rested on my hips and required me to pull them up quite regularly.  I originally had wanted to wait until Christmas (I'm cheap), but in the interest of public safety I thought it best I go ahead and invest in some new clothes.  Sunday I received a 20% off coupon for 1 day at JC Penney's.  Off I went!

I'm going to share some sizes - just to give you the gravity of where I'm coming from.  Before I became pregnant with Rebekah I wore a size 24.  (YIKES!)  Post pregnancy, I was down to a size 22.  After Peter I lost some more weight and was down to a size 20.  I wore these same jeans for quite some time...well, until this past weekend. ;-)  Minus a few months where I was pregnant with Ruth.

Earlier in the summer I had bought some capris - two pair.  One I wear for running and another is a khaki type I wear on weekends.  The khaki's have a tendency to fall off and are size 18.  So I had an inkling I might be a size smaller.  What shocked me was when I tried on the 14's and the 16's at the store and found that the 14's fit great.  (And btw - jean shopping has become highly complicated?  I'm sure the sales lady had a deer in the headlight look when she asked me what type of rise I wanted!  Thankfully she was highly helpful!)  So I walked out of the store with jeans 3 sizes smaller than I what I wore into the store.  Amazing.  And what a WONDERFUL feeling!  I also bought a pair of khaki's ($10, how can I pass 'em up?) and 7 shirts (also smaller).  I still have some clothes to purchase, and I've lost weight in every single area of my body.  Have I mentioned I had to purchase new underwear last week?

I had a total blast on that shopping trip by the way!  I took Rebekah with me and felt a little like Pretty Woman - without the rude sales lady of course!  She had fun too and even gave me fashion advice.  Yes.  I took it.  I figure 5 yo fashion advice from a little girl who cares has got to be better than anything I can come up with. ;-)

So when it came to scale time, I didn't really care.  Let's be honest.  I was just so happy about the size differences!  And I wasn't particularly good last week.  I ate out 3 times and on Friday I had Froyo twice.  In one day.  It just sorta worked out that way.  So I did not have high expectations either!

Results!

Total lost from my heaviest:  91 lbs
Total lost since Feb*: 24 lbs
Weight lost in the last week: - 2 lbs
Weight left to loose: 19 lbs

Well - I've turned that corner!  I have less than 20 lbs to loose!  It feels great!  In honor of this milestone, I hope to post some pictures showing the differences.  We'll see if I get time...I have to scan a few pictures in.  :-P

For the book contest...see?  TWO READERS! ;-)  Janette - I'll give ya the book Sunday and we'll let Lisa have it at Thanksgiving.  Sound good?  We'll chat!

Oh wait...I have one more piece of news.  I have entered to run in the Prairie Fire Mayor's 5K race.  I know folks who are running the marathon and half-marathon...but NO ONE who is running the 5K. :-)  (ah hem)  Hopefully someone will join me.  But if not!  I'll be there with a smile on my face and a hop in my step.  It'll be GREAT!  My goal?  Well - if I'm running by myself it will be to run the 5K in 36 minutes or less.  If anyone joins me - it will be to have fun and enjoy the companionship. :-)

I'm hoping to do at least one other race this fall...I'm just not sure which one yet.  I may just end up doing two!

Another Monday Weigh-In

Monday rolled around again...and again I weighed myself.  Before I get into that...

While involved with Wellness Warriors, I received a copy of "The One-Day Way: Today Is All the Time You Need to Lose All the Weight You Want" by Chantel Hobbs. She sent it to us free.

I don't really need it.  I don't have the time to read it.  I've pretty well gotten all the wisdom from Chantel that I can get.  (Which...I've sucked up a lot.)  So with that said...I'm going to give it to someone.  If you are interested in getting this book...leave a comment letting me know.  If I get more than 1 person interested (seriously now...I have like 2 folks who read this! ;-) ) I'll use random.org to pick someone.  (If perchance someone outside the US is interested - sorry...I can only mail it to US residence only!)  The comments will close (for this give-a-way) next Tuesday Aug. 9th.

And in other news...William is home with Ruth this week.  She's under the weather and we determined to keep her home for the entire week.  (I'll post some info about that some other time - the Lord's hand has been at work and is amazing!)  Because he was at home, the timing worked out to where I was able to go run this morning.  And it was beautiful!  80F, slightly breezy, puffy clouds!  I loved it.  I clocked in at 26:22 for my 2 miles.  I really wanted to do a 3rd mile, but I couldn't get it squeeze in without being overly late.  Ah well...and since today is supposed to be 110F...I'm super happy I was able to get it in.  I'm hoping to do this again later in the week (Wed or Thur).

And now my weigh-in...

Total lost from my heaviest:  89 lbs
Total lost since Feb*: 22 lbs
Weight lost in the last week: - 1 lbs
Weight left to loose: 21 lbs

Another pound zapped and one step closer to being below 20 lbs to loose.  :-)  With this heat, running has been tough so I'm not expecting huge numbers and am so happy with this 1 lb loss.  For some perspective...in June I walk/ran 57.2 miles.  In July I walk/ran 32.3 miles.  When I noticed this - it really made sense.  Getting out in 110+ F weather is not something I enjoy.  I do it because it is good for me.  And clearly my miles ran are reflective of that.  (OK - and my walking partner stopped walking at the beginning of July...being 9 mo pregnant she just didn't have it in her anymore! So that is also part of these numbers!)

I have some more thoughts on all of the support and encouragement (and some interesting observations) I've received, but I will have to save that for another post. :-)

Monday Weigh Day

I begrudgingly weighed myself yesterday morning.  I didn't want to.  Not one bit.  But...I felt it was necessary.  I find that weighing myself too much is demotivating...but weighing myself sometimes is necessary to make sure I stay on track.

So last week we had heat in the 100s.  Again.  All week long.  I ran Sat/Sun 3 miles each day, 1.5 miles on Wed (in 105) and then another 3 miles the following Saturday.  I didn't get out on Sun due to a little baby sleeping through the night (YAY!) and waking up H.U.N.G.R.Y. before I could get out the door.  I was torn, but the Lord spoke to me and said not to worry...take it easy...enjoy my baby.  He reminded me to keep my priorities in His order.  While exercise is important, of course my baby is more important.  So I settled down with her and nursed her.  (I would have never left her hungry...I'm not saying that!  I would have woke up William to give her a bottle. :)  Just to be clear...)

So I didn't get in as much exercise as I would have liked too.  I wasn't expecting too much on the scale...honestly.  I had hoped for a tiny movement down but knew that more likely I'd be about the same.

And as a reminder...last week I was the same.  The week before, I had a 2 lb gain.  (I don't think I posted about that...haha!)

This week...I've lost another 4 lbs.  =-O

4 lbs?

That is all God.  All God.  And I'm so happy He's got my back.  And it just highlights the fact that when we focus on the work He sets before us, everything else will fall into place.  And it is a reminder to me to not be too zealous - to check what it is He wants me to do that day.  :-)

The LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything. ~Deuteronomy 2:7 (NIV)

Total lost from my heaviest:  88 lbs
Total lost since Feb*: 21 lbs
Weight lost in the last week: - 4 lbs
Weight left to loose: 22 lbs

I can't believe I just have 22 lbs to go!  Hooray!  I see the light at the end of the tunnel and I'm so excited.  I can't wait until I have less than 20 lbs to go.  Won't THAT be awesome?

Kicking my butt...

I can handle busy at work.  I can handle busy at home.  But...when I'm busy at work and at home...it kicks my butt.

Last week we had Vacation Bible School (VBS).  I fell into bed exhausted every night...and took a 4 hr nap on Saturday (and woke up dragging) and another 3 hr nap on Sunday.

Yeah...tired.

I did weigh myself on Monday and the good news is I didn't gain any weight. :)  After the way I ate last week and the lack of exercise...I was actually pretty happy with that.

Today I ran 1.5 miles in 105 F.  Can't say I loved it...but I was pretty happy I did it.  I needed to do it.  My exercise has been a mess!

Scale update

I weighed myself yesterday.

Before I get to that...I just wanted to share a few more thoughts on running!

Reasons to run:

  1. You can do it anywhere.  Jog in place in your living room? Sure!  Track?  Park?  Neighborhood?  No problem!
  2. Low cost start up.  You just need a pair of sneakers!  And sometimes, not even that...barefoot anyone?  (No I am NOT crazy!)
  3. Versatile.  Competitive?  Sure.  Want some time by yourself?  No problem.  Want to hang out with some friends?  Of course!  Running is all of these things.
  4. There is always some goal to reach.  You are never "there".
  5. It is hard...and I like challenges.
I think those are some pretty compelling reasons.  Furthermore...I've talked with a few people lately that WISH they could run.  Due to poor physical health, they can't.  And I'm happy I'm not in that boat.  I might as well run while I can right?

And now back to the scale...the ugly ugly scale.  I haven't weighed myself in almost two weeks.  The scale and I are simply not friends.  I fear every single time I step onto that scale that I will see a gain.  And that is tough for me to swallow.  BUT - it is important to weigh yourself regularly...otherwise it is difficult to tell if the right things are being done for weight loss.  :)  If weight isn't being lost, then something has to change!

So I dutifully weighed myself...*drum roll please*...I've lost 3 lbs!  That puts me at 27 more to go.  This was a rather HUGE milestone for me as it breaks a certain number I've been waiting to see change for a loooooong long time.  And when I think "Wow, all I have to loose are 27 more lbs!" it just seems SO doable.  Certainly more doable than the "Wow, all I have to loose are 110 more lbs!" I was thinking while pregnant with Rebekah.

Sometimes I wonder if being so close will make me lazy...but I'm so blessed that I have a sweet husband who encourages me and am surrounded with wonderful friends who hold me accountable.  SO...not only do I believe I'll get to that goal, but I do believe I'll stay there.  And yes - I ask myself that all the time.  I guess the benefit of spending 5 years taking this weight off is that your brain just changes over that time so that you can't help but create long lasting life style changes. :-)

A prideful run

I mentioned before that I had been told that running is 90% mental

Last week I didn't get to run much.  I had trouble finding time due to staying home with kids with pink eye and no jogging stroller.  (I wondered how I'd do it if I was a stay at home mom briefly until I realized I simply didn't have the correct tools! ;-)  See?  Where there is determination...!!!)

Anyway, William was on call last weekend.  Typically these weekends are pretty miserable.  I'm pretty much the only parent available and it really wears me out.  I was feeling down and out because of my lack of running and the miserable weekend.  THEN - William came home (from a bogus call) and asked me if I wanted to go for a run.

Of course I wanted to go for a run!

So off I went.  As I was running I started thinking about the kids...they were particularly terrible this weekend.  They weren't listening and fighting.  The not listening can be pretty typical (it goes in phases), but they very rarely don't get along.  Add on top of that one cranky baby and let's just say it definitely wasn't a weekend I wanted to linger.

On this particular run I ended up walking a lot.  And in the end my time was 30:14 for 2 miles.  I thought about this and decided this was just further proof that running definitely has a mental aspect to it.

Monday I went for another run.  This time it was hot and I kept cramping up.  I again ended up walking a lot, but my time was better.  28 minutes and something.

Tuesday I went for yet another run.  On my way to the run I had been feeling discouraged that I hadn't been able to run the entire 2 miles for the last couple runs.  So this time I decided to pace myself.  My goal was run it all and prove to myself I could do it.

The first mile was easy enough.  With all my running, it still amazes me how that has become a piece of cake.  I plugged on through and kept going.  I made lots of bargains with myself and strengthened my resolve.  The further I went, the more I knew I could do it.  So the bargaining became "Well you've gone this far..."  And I did it.  I was super proud of myself on this particular run for making it.  And my time ended up being 26:42.  Not too shabby (for me).

I believe this proves that running is 90% mental, with the other 10% being mental. ;-)

Today I just did a strengthening workout (and some walking in the form of purse shopping).  Tomorrow I will run again.  We will be visiting my in-laws this weekend, so my plan is to go on another run Sat afternoon or Sun morning.  There is a very pretty road that I ran on last time I was there.  It is very hilly!  But a fun (and tiring) run.

I still haven't weighed myself.  My mornings have been funky this week thanks to Ruth's weird sleeping patterns.  Hopefully I'll get to that tomorrow!

Why run?

I am certain I have annoyed the heck out of everyone who has been around me...because all I talk about is exercise.  Hey - it is what is on my mind!  So...it is what I'm obviously going to talk about!

I was emailing a friend the other day and started rambling about why I run.  She didn't really ask, and probably got more of an "eyeful" than she bargained for. ;-)  But, sometimes when I write thoughts come spilling out and it sort of helps me think.  So I guess she was on the recipient end of a thoughtful discussion with myself!  I wanted to share some of those thoughts here.

When I started running, a runner friend of mine from work stopped by to see how I was doing after my first run.  I was a bit sore, but it was a "good" kind of sore.  I didn't particularly enjoy my first run...and so I asked her point blank:  Do you like running?  She threw up her hands and exclaimed "NO!  I do it because it is the right thing to do!"  Then she started talking about all the health benefits she has seen in herself from running.  She only started running in November, but is already up to 4-5 miles at a time (regularly) and just completed her first half marathon a couple weeks ago.

Wow.

Inspiring right?

So I've thought about it a lot as I jog.  I'm actually mostly enjoying the running.  I love being outside.  To me, it is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors.  Yesterday, a couple squirrels were playing on the path.  When they saw me the ran to the side and sat and watched me run past (from a safe distance).  I've seen rabbits and other wildlife too.  I have a great appreciation for wildlife and all things outside.  So getting exercise and enjoying outside at the same time?  Sounds like a win win solution to me!

I love the feeling of accomplishment.  I've been getting better and better.  This last weekend I went 2.25 miles, on a hilly road, in 30:30.  Yesterday, I beat my 1 mile record of 12:57 with a time of 12:44.  I wasn't really even trying, and when I saw that I felt so proud.  I also went almost 1.5 miles (1.47) and felt proud I squeezed in that extra half mile in about the same time (20 minutes) that I had been doing a mile previously.  So I guess I enjoy seeing tangible progress!  (These couple milestones helped, since I did stop and walk...and I was bummed about THAT!)

I have found that I'm kinda picky about my running.  The idea of a treadmill is just plain awful to me.  I don't know why...but that isn't a new thought.  I've always hated treadmills.  (I feel like I'm going nowhere!)  I do prefer going in a larger circle vs. running in a line and retracing my steps on the return route.  I sometimes get lazy on the return - but a circle is just somehow different.  It is a psychological thing for me.  And lastly - I had the opportunity to run on a high school track, but preferred running along a road instead of multiple circles.  I loved the scenery.  The track didn't have much of that.  PLUS - I knew I'd find myself wondering when I would be done instead of enjoying the view.  And really - I enjoy it best when there is a pretty view.  When I went my little 1 mile route that was convenient (but not very pretty and not much to see), I quickly found I needed a new route for mental stimulation...otherwise it would have been the death of my running.  Thank goodness I live near a huge park!

I still find it hard to get going sometimes.  My legs feel like lead, and frequently no matter how excited I am to get going...when I start my head always fills with "Why am I doing this?  This sucks!"  LOL  Every single time...I guess it is the ol' roller coaster effect for me again.  But once I get going, clear my head and get into a rhythm...I'm good for awhile.  And I have no idea how this story will turn when it gets super hot outside.  I've run in 85 degree weather and thought it was going to kill me.  I may be taking my bike out more often during the heat...or who knows?  I'll get used to running in the heat and keep on running.  We'll have to see how that one works out!  At this point - I'm not going to make any guesses because this entire thing has simply surprised the heck out of me!

I'm enjoying running (overall) way more than I thought I ever would.  Leaps and bounds more!  Up until I got the hair brained idea to even do a 5K, I was dead set on believing that while running looked fun, it absolutely was not. Oh - and I hated it.  WITH a passion! I'm not really sure why I decided to do the 5K or what changed my mind in the beginning.  But here I am...enjoying it.  If nothing else, I think it has taught me that I shouldn't hold onto beliefs and opinions and re-evaluate things regularly.

My 2 mile race is June 4th.  I'm WAY excited...my goal is to run the entire thing.  My gravy goal is to run it 27 minutes or less.
